What's the most important spec when buying a paddle?
Swing weight . It's how heavy the paddle feels once it's moving, and it sets both how much pace you get on a full swing and how fast your hands are at the kitchen. The static weight printed on the box tells you much less.
What weight pickleball paddle should I use?
Static weight is the least useful number on the box. Of the paddles I've weighed, 80% land between 7.8 and 8.2 ounces, and the entire catalog spans 7.3 to 8.9. There isn't much there to choose between. It doesn't predict output either: across everything I've measured, static weight and serve speed are uncorrelated. Pick on swing weight instead, which is how heavy the paddle feels once it's moving.
Does paddle shape change spin?
No. Elongated averages 2226 RPM, hybrid 2228 and widebody 2228 across the paddles I've measured. That gap is a rounding error next to the spread inside any one shape. What does track with spin is how rough the face is. Choose your shape for sweet spot and reach.
Which paddle shape is most forgiving?
Widebody. Twist weight averages 6.9 on widebodies, 6.5 on hybrids and 6.2 on elongateds, so a ball caught off-center holds its line better on the wide shape. You give up reach for it.
Do more expensive paddles play better?
Depends what you mean by better. Price buys power, and it often costs you control. Control Score runs the other way, 77 down to 59 across the same bands. Control Score is a beta metric and I hold it loosely, but that direction is consistent. The most powerful paddle I've measured is $280. Fifteen paddles have scored a perfect 100 on control, and not one of them costs $200 or more. Raw output barely moves either way: under $100 averages 2200 RPM and 59.5 mph on serves, $200 and up averages 2257 RPM and 60.2 mph. Twist weight, the forgiveness number, doesn't track with price at all.
How often should I replace a paddle?
There's no mileage number on a paddle. Replace it when it's cracked or crushed, when you lost spin, when the ball comes off dead, or when it suddenly plays hotter than it did new. A paddle that gains pace out of nowhere has a crushed core, and it's on the way out rather than getting better. Past that it's preference. If it stopped clicking for you and you're ready to move on, that's reason enough.
