MATT'S VERDICT
The R1 delivers legitimate power paddle performance at a budget price, but stock it feels thin and hollow with harsh edge drop-off on off-center hits due to low twist weight at 5.6. Add weight strategically at three and nine o'clock (about 7-8 grams per side using 1 gram per inch tape) and everything transforms: the hollow thud becomes deeper, power jumps significantly into Boomstik territory, and the usable sweet spot expands dramatically.
