Intro

The CRBN TruFoam Waves solve Genesis's biggest problem while creating a new one. These paddles eliminate the unpredictable hot spots that plagued Genesis's partial fiberglass construction, but they shrink the effective sweet spot and reduce forgiveness in the process. After weeks of testing all four shapes, the question isn't whether they're better than Genesis - they are in most measurable ways. The question is whether those improvements justify $280 when alternatives exist for less money.

CRBN sent all four shapes for testing with no expectations or requirements for positive coverage. The company provided these paddles freely but had no input on this review's content or conclusions.

What makes the Waves worth examining is their "extreme dwell" design philosophy combined with measurable spin performance. The TFW3 maxed out spin testing at 2404 RPM for 100th percentile performance, while serve speeds consistently land in the 81st to 87th percentile range across all models. Use code MPB for 10% off if you decide these match your needs and budget.

The Waves represent CRBN's attempt to create a power-focused paddle series that prioritizes spin generation through extended ball contact time rather than explosive rebound.

Tech Overview

The core uses curved "wave-pattern" channels instead of Genesis's straight-line voids. These sinusoidal channels create mini-arches that provide structural strength while allowing more flex, directly translating to longer ball contact time and higher spin numbers. The physics are straightforward, and the RPM data proves the concept works.

The biggest change lies in face construction. Instead of Genesis's partial fiberglass patch in the center, Waves feature full-face woven fiberglass sandwiched between carbon fiber layers. This eliminates the random hot spots where Genesis would send balls flying unpredictably, but creates more pronounced dead zones at the perimeter. The result is consistent performance that drops off hard at the edges rather than inconsistent performance across the face.

Manufacturing quality shows improvement over Genesis. Test paddles tracked much closer to published specifications than Genesis ever did, and construction was consistent out of the box. The proprietary adhesives and heat-press process appear to address core crush and delamination issues seen in some competing foam paddles.

The extreme dwell design affects every aspect of play. Unlike paddles such as the Ronbus Ripple where you notice obvious ball pocketing, the Waves play firmer to the touch while still achieving extended contact time. The dwell characteristic is more subtle but shows up clearly in spin performance data.

Specs

All four shapes share 14mm thickness with handle circumference of 4.125 inches. The TFW1 elongated measures 16.5 x 7.375 inches with a 5.75-inch handle, coming in at 7.92 ounces with 118.05 swing weight and 5.85 twist weight. The TFW2 standard measures 16.0 x 7.875 inches with 5.5-inch handle at 8.11 ounces, 110.6 swing weight, and 6.9 twist weight. The TFW3 elongated with shorter handle runs 16.5 x 7.5 inches at 8.26 ounces, 118.7 swing weight, and 6.7 twist weight. The TFW4 hybrid measures 16.125 x 7.875 inches at 7.99 ounces with 108.75 swing weight and 6.55 twist weight.

The twist weight differences matter more than the firepower scores for most players. Higher twist weight translates directly to more forgiveness on off-center hits, which becomes crucial given these paddles' smaller effective sweet spots. The TFW2's 6.9 twist weight creates the largest effective hitting area, while the TFW1's 5.85 twist weight makes it the most demanding option.

Balance points split into two groups - TFW2 and TFW4 around 23.8-23.9 cm for head-light feel, while TFW1 and TFW3 sit at 24.4-24.7 cm for more neutral balance. All shapes benefit from added weight, with room for 4-6 grams per side without significantly impacting maneuverability.

Playtest

The extreme dwell design creates controlled power that requires adaptation. Drives and serves don't provide explosive rebound but instead compress the ball, shape it through longer contact time, then release with controlled pace. Topspin drives dipped harder than most paddles tested, backing up those spin percentiles with actual court performance.

Touch shots reveal both strengths and limitations clearly. Finding the center produces controlled dinks with depth management and sharp angle capability. Missing the center zone results in balls that either die in the net or jump unpredictably. The TFW2's larger sweet spot provides the most confidence at the net, while the TFW1 demands the cleanest contact consistently.

Against heavy pace, these can initially play unstable. The dwell design absorbs impact rather than providing immediate rebound, which takes adjustment. Once adapted, you can reset and redirect incoming shots more effectively, but the learning curve is real.

Serve performance varies by shape. The TFW1 and TFW4 delivered the highest speeds in testing, providing weapons for players who can handle their respective precision demands. The TFW2 provides the most consistent serve placement despite lower speed numbers, while the firepower score of 83 makes it the most powerful overall.

Adding weight transforms these paddles. Modifications including 12 grams from logo to head on the TFW4 increased static weight to 8.6 ounces, swing weight to 118, and twist weight to 7.3. The stability improvement against pace was substantial while maintaining maneuverability.

Shape Comparisons

The TFW2 offers the largest sweet spot and best stability with its 6.9 twist weight. The firepower score of 83 makes it the most powerful, and it maxed out spin testing at 99th percentile. This works for players wanting consistency and spin over raw serve speed.

The TFW3 combines elongated reach with manageable stability. At 100th percentile spin and 87th percentile serve speeds, it offers performance for players wanting maximum spin with reasonable precision demands. The 6.7 twist weight provides forgiveness for an elongated shape.

The TFW1 delivers the highest serve speeds but that 5.85 twist weight makes it unforgiving. This suits advanced players who consistently find the sweet spot and want maximum reach. The 5.75-inch handle works better for two-handed backhands but plays cumbersome for smaller hands.

The TFW4 provides the best all-court balance. The lowest swing weight makes it most maneuverable while delivering solid performance across all metrics. This shape works for the widest range of playing styles without major compromises.

Most players should choose the TFW4 for versatility or TFW2 for maximum spin with forgiveness. The TFW3 suits players wanting elongated benefits with high spin, while the TFW1 remains a specialized option for those needing the longer handle.

Recommendations

The Waves suit players who prioritize spin generation and shot shaping over explosive pop and maximum forgiveness. You need willingness to adapt to the extreme dwell characteristic rather than fighting against it. The TFW2 works for touch-heavy players wanting maximum spin with reasonable stability. The TFW4 suits all-court players wanting versatility without sacrificing spin potential.

Avoid these if you prefer immediate explosive feedback or need oversized forgiveness on mishits. Players relying on paddle-generated pop rather than creating their own pace will find the dwell design frustrating. These also aren't ideal for developing players still building consistent contact technique.

Compare against the Ronbus Quanta at $99 for more forgiveness and larger sweet spots. The Bread & Butter Loco provides explosive pop for $100 less. The Selkirk Boomstik offers more raw power at $333 but less maneuverability. Within CRBN's lineup, choose Waves over Genesis for new purchases, but existing Genesis owners shouldn't feel compelled to upgrade.

Price and Value

At $280 MSRP, these aren't worth it for most players. Early access starts September 24th with code "Pursuit," followed by public launch September 25th. Code MPB provides 10% off purchases.

The performance data is solid - serve speeds in 81st to 87th percentiles, spin numbers that max out testing scales, improvements over Genesis. But the question isn't whether these are good paddles. The question is whether they justify premium pricing when alternatives exist for less money.

The Ronbus Quanta offers more forgiveness for $180 less. The Bread & Butter Loco provides explosive power many players prefer for $100 less. The Honolulu NF series delivers performance at lower price points. The Waves justify their price only if you need high spin capability and can consistently access it.

For Genesis owners, the improvements are incremental rather than transformational. You're paying $280 for marginal gains while giving up some forgiveness Genesis provided. Unless you're frustrated with Genesis's inconsistent hot spots, your money is better spent elsewhere.

Conclusion

The CRBN TruFoam Waves deliver measurable performance upgrades over Genesis while creating new limitations around forgiveness and sweet spot size. Elite spin performance and consistent face response represent genuine improvements, but the premium pricing makes them difficult to recommend against better value alternatives.

Genesis vs Waves for new buyers? Choose Waves without question. Against the broader market? Much harder to justify unless spin capability is your absolute priority and you have the contact consistency to unlock these paddles' potential.

About
CRBN
Company Information
CRBN Pickleball was founded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 by Garrett, who had recently lost his job. During this challenging time, Garrett discovered pickleball and quickly became passionate about the sport, dedicating hours each day to playing and improving his skills. As he progressed, he started competing in tournaments with his doubles partner, Ryan. After one of their matches, Ryan proposed the idea of creating their own paddles. They realized that, as avid players, they had a clear understanding of what they wanted and needed in a paddle and believed they could create something better than what was currently available. This idea led to the creation of CRBN Pickleball, where the focus is on designing paddles that meet the high standards and specific needs of serious players.
